The Staff at Latimer Animal Hospital is committed to providing individualized medical care services to your animal. In order to provide your pet with a long and happy life, our focus is on preventative care. That’s why we offer wellness plans. By staying healthy with regular checkups and routine vaccinations, it can decrease the lifetime cost of care for your pet.
Regular wellness exams include screenings for a variety of common diseases that affect your pet’s health. These screenings become even more important as your pet ages. Good client/doctor communication is another important aspect in your pets care. It’s important for the doctor to talk to each client and interview regularly regarding your pet’s health. Education is another and equally important part in wellness plans. We want to empower you with all information necessary to provide the best care for your pet at home.
Pet Wellness Exams
Regular wellness exams are an integral part of your pet’s preventative healthcare. You go to the doctor regularly, shouldn’t your pet?
A routine exam provides an opportunity for the doctor to get a sense of your pets overall health as well as catch any potential medical issues before they become a major issue. It’s also a time to develop a relationship and rapport with the doctor, and he can provide you with important advice and new information on the care of your particular type and breed of animal.
Latimer Animal Hospital recommends a complete nose to tail physical at least once a year and a detailed screening.
At this time the Doctors will:
- Listen to the heart
- Listen to the lungs
- Check your pets teeth and oral cavity
- Evaluate your pets vision
- Check ears
- Palpate the lymph nodes, abdomen and stomach
- Check joints and muscles
- Laboratory work – heartworm test and blood tests
- Parasite testing

Radiographs are one of the most important diagnostic tools that veterinary medicine has. They are extremely helpful for diagnosing and monitoring many medical and surgical conditions. X-rays are useful for examining your pet’s bones, lungs, heart, abdomen, oral cavity and other areas. It can detect bone fractures, tumors, heart problems, and locate an obstruction or foreign object within your pet’s body.
Latimer Animal Hospital utilizes digital radiography. This means we can quickly take highly detailed x-rays and manipulate them to gain a better view within your pets.
Latimer Animal Hospital offers a full service laboratory that allows us to perform a wide array of services including complete blood counts, chemistry profiles, electrolytes, urinalysis, fecal exams, cytology evaluations, and other tests for your pet. With our latest technology, we are able to retrieve fast and accurate results, therefore helping to determine your pet’s diagnosis and implementing a treatment.
Our in house lab is especially important when dealing with an emergency or critical case. Often we can have results within 15 minutes thus increasing better outcomes in emergency situations.

Thankfully due to vaccinating we do not see as many cases of major infectious diseases in our pets. Your pet can be protected against most major infectious diseases. Today, immunizations and preventative medicines are available that did not exist a decades ago.
Vaccines are useful in preventing canine distemper, parvovirus, bordetella, rabies, Lyme disease, and other diseases in your dog and feline leukemia, panleukopenia, rabies, and feline immunodeficiency virus in cats. Latimer Animal Hospital can assist you in deciding which preventative measures are necessary for your pet.

Rhinotracheitis (herpes virus)
Non-core vaccines for dogs
– Bordetella is a bacteria commonly associated with respiratory infections in dogs, also known as kennel cough. This vaccine is recommended if your dog attends day care, visits dog parks, boarding kennels or any location that he/she may be nose-to-nose with other dogs.

Studies have shown that 10 million pets get lost each year and about 90% of those would not return to these owners without some sort of permanent lost pet ID.
This is why we view microchip lost pets ID’s as a standard of protection for your pet. With a microchip, your pet can be identified quickly and easily. They are safe and permanent ID’s for pets.
If you are interested in Microchipping, please talk to the Doctors or Staff.
